At Kukuiʻula, the spirit of Hoʻokipa—gracious hospitality and heartfelt service—is more than a mindset; it’s something we live and breathe. Few embody that spirit more completely than Jason Dameron. As the ʻIke ʻOla Manager and lead guide of the Huakaʻi Outfitters, Jason oversees a wide range of unforgettable experiences, rooted in local culture, natural beauty, and a lifetime of ocean wisdom.
A Path Shaped by the Ocean
Jason’s journey began just after high school on the sands of Waikīkī. He enrolled in a lifeguard training class led by Myra Aikau—sister of legendary Eddie Aikau—and soon found himself teaching surf lessons to local kids. “We’d pull the van right up onto the beach behind where the Duke statue is now,” he says. What started as a summer gig turned into five years of surf instruction, lifeguard training, and CPR classes for the City and County of Honolulu. Eventually, Jason joined the beach lifeguard team on Oʻahu’s west side, patrolling stretches from Nānākuli to Yokohama. His favorite post? “Makaha,” he says without hesitation.
Living What He Loves
Jason’s relationship with the water has never just been about work—it’s a source of calm, purpose, and passion. “I’ve always loved sharing the ocean,” he says. “It’s the heart of who I am.” That passion led him to Kukuiʻula, where he’s now spent nearly eight years helping others fall in love with this place through meaningful, hands-on experiences.
Whether it’s sailing, surfing, fishing, hiking, hunting, or e-foiling, no two days on the Huakaʻi team are ever the same. And that’s exactly how Jason likes it. “I get to do what I love—and share it with others. That’s a gift.”
Time Well Spent
When he’s not leading outdoor adventures, Jason is often out on the water with his youngest daughter Mehana, who’s making a name for herself in Kauaʻi’s paddling community. “She keeps me in shape,” he laughs. “We won our last two-man canoe race together.”
Jason also finds peace in his woodshop, crafting everything from paddle gear to custom pieces for his beloved sailing canoe, Kailele. He’s a skilled archer, too—whether he’s tuning his bow or spending quiet mornings out hunting, it’s clear Jason is always in tune with the rhythms of the land and sea.
A Favorite Place, A Growing Future
Ask Jason for his favorite beach or hiking trail, and you’ll get a smile and a polite deflection: “Nice try,” he jokes. “Let’s just say the water’s beautiful and it’s never crowded.” He will, however, share one pro tip: “Come sail on Kailele. It’s the best way to see the south shore—and the best place to ask questions.”
As Kukuiʻula’s adventure programs continue to evolve, Jason is excited for what lies ahead. “We’re always growing—offering more, creating new ways for people to experience this place. That’s what keeps it fun, for them and for us.”
