OUR STORY

Sharing our rich heritage.

There are a number of beautiful cultural customs that inspire life here at Kukui‘ula and connects us to the lore that is Kaua‘i nei. Hawaiian and local traditions are perpetuated through ceremonies and celebrations bringing past, present, and future in alignment, helping residents and guests create a deeper and more meaningful connection to the people and places that make Kaua‘i one of the most magical locations in the world to reside.

OUR NAME

KUKUI‘ULA, FROM TWO WORDS

Kukui, or candlenut—the source for lighting oil, was a prized “canoe plant” of early Polynesians—and ‘ula, “red.” Hence, Kukui‘ula is often translated as “red light.” Kukui‘ula’s name is rooted in three ancient lighthouses. With one located here at Kukuiʻula, lama kuhikuhi (beacons), burned red with Kukui nut, guiding voyagers home. While these lama kuhikuhi are no longer lit each night, Kukui‘ula remains the welcoming and safe harbor it has always been.

HERITAGE

A LOVE FOR THE ‘Āina

Kukui‘ula is on land that holds a special place in Hawaiian history. Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana‘ole, the “People’s Prince,” was born nearby and is beloved for his life-long service to the Hawaiian people. Queen Emma, wife of King Kamehameha IV, sought refuge here after the death of her husband and son, and was known as “The Queen who took the land to heart.” Her humanitarian legacy includes the establishment of Queen’s Hospital.

LEGACY

OUR COLLECTIVE KULEANA

Those who have been fortunate enough to be stewards of this special place have been intent on honoring its heritage, preserving it in sustainable and innovative ways while creating a legacy community that embodies the history and significance of Kukui‘ula. The Hawaiian proverb “He ali‘i ka ‘āina; he kauwā ke kāne” — The land is chief; man is its servant — is one of the most enduring expressions of aloha ‘āina (love of the land) and the kuleana or responsibility of her people.

In Hawaiian Culture, there are many beautiful customs that inspire our traditions here at Kukui‘ula. One such practice is our Ke Alaula Sunrise Ceremony. A profoundly moving experience, participants begin the month anew after chanting up the first sunrise of the month on a bluff overlooking the ocean. On the last day of each month we gather to say aloha to the sun on the Great Lawn at The Clubhouse and welcome a new month ahead.

A BELOVED TRADITION

MAY DAY

May 1st in Hawaiʻi is “Lei Day,” an official holiday that captures the spirit of the islands and celebrates the tradition of making, giving, and receiving of lei. Every year we host a Lei Contest and May Day Hoʻolauleʻa – a crowd favorite – featuring mele (song) and hula performances by local hula hālau (hula school), and high-end craft vendors.
