The Heart of Hoʻokipa: Joseph Schoniwitz, Greeter

At Kukuiʻula, it is the people who shape each arrival. The familiar faces who welcome you in, remember your name, and set the tone for everything that follows. For more than a decade, Joseph Schoniwitz has been one of those steady and recognizable presences at The Club, greeting members and guests with warmth and genuine care.

His role is simple in title, but meaningful in every interaction. As he shares, he is “the last official Greeter at The Club at Kukuiʻula.

A Full Circle Journey

For Joseph, the idea of welcoming others began long before Kukuiʻula.

My career journey actually began back in the early ‘70s as a child,” he recalls. Growing up, he lived in several trailer parks and found himself naturally drawn to meeting new arrivals. He became the unofficial welcoming party, greeting neighbors as they settled in. Looking back, his role today feels like a continuation of something that started long ago.
This job felt and feels as if my life has come full circle to when I greeted new neighbors to our trailer parks,” he shares.

A Career Built on Connection

Before joining Kukuiʻula, Joseph spent more than 30 years in management across hospitality and the medical field, including time with Hyatt Hotels and other well-known properties, as well as eight years at Kauai Medical Clinic.

When the opportunity at Kukuiʻula came along in 2012, he was drawn to something different. He was looking for a role where he could focus on the present moment and leave work at work. Of all the positions he had held, the Greeter role stood out as the one that felt most natural.

He saw it as a chance to welcome both new and returning guests as a “good friend,” creating a memorable experience from the very start.

The Joy in Every Arrival

Over the years, it is the daily rhythm of connection that has meant the most. Joseph shares that he enjoys greeting arriving guests, building friendships throughout their stay, and welcoming them back day after day. He takes pride in creating genuine connections, often sharing a meaningful moment each week with a guest or family that enriches their time at The Club and his own. But beyond the daily interactions, it is the members who have left the greatest impression.

Over the last 14 years what I have really enjoyed the most are our Members,” he says. Their investment in building a community at Kukuiʻula has allowed him to form lasting relationships and get to know so many wonderful people over the years.

Life Beyond The Club

Outside of work, Joseph’s focus is centered on family and building a meaningful life with his wife, Tammy. He shares that nurturing their relationship is his highest priority, along with spending time with their two children, Chelsie and Travis.

Travel has also been an important part of their life together. From cruises to destinations like Mexico and Alaska to travels throughout Europe and Asia, their experiences have taken them around the world. They continue to look forward to new adventures, with more travel plans ahead.

Closer to home, his days often include enjoying music, reading novels, and yard work as needed.

When it comes to dining on Kauaʻi, he recommends Gaylords, Eating House, and Hukilau Lanai for special occasions.

Looking Ahead

As he looks to the future of Kukuiʻula, Joseph is most excited about the new guests who will arrive seeking a memorable experience, as well as the continued growth of the membership community.

For him, each new arrival is an opportunity. A chance to create a connection, to offer a warm welcome, and to help shape someone’s time here in a meaningful way.

A Lasting Presence

After more than a decade at Kukuiʻula, Joseph’s presence has become part of the rhythm of The Club. A familiar smile at arrival. A steady voice of welcome. A reminder that hospitality, at its heart, is about connection.

And in many ways, it is exactly where he was always meant to be.
