Hala, a revered plant to the lives of the Hawaiian people.
Known by its scientific genus, Pandanus, the hala provides food, medicine, and materials for weaving mats, baskets, canoe sails, hats, lei, bracelets, and much more.
“Lauhala” or the leaf of the hala tree are gathered, cleaned, thorns removed, softened, and stripped to size for this introductory weaving project.
