THE GOLF COURSE AT KUKUI`ULA continues to gain prestige and a reputation as one of the world’s premier new private courses. Designed by Tom Weiskopf, the course takes advantage of the natural terrain and offers spectacular ocean views from many of the holes. The course was invited to host one of Hawaii’s two local qualifying events for the 2012 United States Open Championship. This year’s US open will take place June 14-17 at San Francisco’s Olympic Club, and will be the fifth US Open Championship played at Olympic.
The excitement was palpable as some of Hawaii’s best golfers teed off at Kukui‘ula on Tuesday, May 15th to begin their quest to make the final field in San Francisco. The 18-hole local qualifier is the first step on a golfer’s quest for a US Open title. Any professional or amateur golfer with a USGA men’s handicap of 1.4 or lower is eligible to throw his hat into the ring. Several of the top players from each local qualifier advance to a sectional qualifier, and the best of the best move on to compete in the Open.
Only 109 courses were dedicated as qualifying sites in 2012. Inclusion in the local qualifying round instantly brands a golf course as a venue worthy of world-class professional play and a fine test of golf. Brian Paul, Kukui‘ula’s head golf pro, can fully appreciate the magnitude of receiving an invitation to participate in this historic tournament, which has captured the hearts and ignited the dreams of golf enthusiasts since its inception in 1895, “It’s a great privilege for the golf course at Kukui`ula to host Local Qualifying for the United States Open in only its second year of existence,” says Paul, who is quick to give credit where credit is due, “I think it’s a real credit to the fair but tough test of golf Tom Weiskopf has created, and also the extraordinary job our golf course superintendent Danny Sapp and his team have done here to fast track the playing conditions to a tournament level in such little time. Having opened two other golf courses prior to this one, I’m still amazed at how quickly Danny and his crew was able to grow in the golf course and establish a custom maintenance program fit for our turf type, climate, and terrain. There is usually a lot of trial and error involved in the grow-in and maintenance process at any start up project, but here we’ve had very little error. I look forward to seeing how the course stands up to some of the best players in Hawaii on May 15th.”
The Kukui‘ula golf course is quickly making a name for itself across the nation and beyond. Named by Golf Magazine as the “Best New Private Course in 2011” and by Robb Report as “Best of the Best”, golf at the best Kauai luxury real estate is an experience you will not want to miss.
Beautiful, isn’t it?
