Kukui’ula looks like a project from another era- say 2004, when developers couldn’t build luxury retreats fast enough.
For those still looking for second or third homes, the new Hawaiian golf community touts its “laid-back lifestyle” and exotic amenities, including helicopter rides across the rugged, inaccessible center of Kauai and horseback rides through taro fields.
That kind of makes Tom Weiskopf’s latest design, a 7,028-yard layout hard against the coastline, seem tame by comparison. The golf course, which has been open for limited member play since December, is holding its grand opening this month.
The development encompasses more than 1,000 acres on the south side of Kauai, Hawaii’s northernmost island. Kukui’ula is being developed by DMB Associates, a Scottsdale, Ariz-based firm whose credits include Forest Highlands and Silverleaf in Arizona, as well as Martis Camp and Lahontan in Truckee, Calif.
