2. MakahikiThe appearance of the Makaliʻi (Pleiades) in the eastern sky signals the Hawaiian New Year and the start of the Makahiki season, a time to honor Lono, the God of rain, agriculture, harvest, peace, and fertility. Members and Guests of The Lodge at Kukuiʻula are invited to join us on the shores of Kukuiʻula Harbor for the Ke Alaula Sunrise Ceremony, where we welcome Kailele (Kukuiʻula’s sailing canoe) as it sails to shore carrying Lonoikamakahiki, the symbolic staff of Makahiki. A procession to Hale Huakaʻi for closing rituals, fellowship, and coffee will follow. Later in the week, Members and Guests can test their skill, strength, and intellect in traditional Hawaiian games on the Great Lawn, as part of the Makahiki festivities. The day of games will be capped off with the blowing of the pū (conch shell) to welcome our hula performers. Enjoy pūpū, cocktails, and the company of friends—old and new—while watching a beautiful hula presentation by Kumu Hula Troy Lazaro and his award-winning hālau, Ka Pa Hula o Hinano. |
