Hawaiian kings and queens made summer homes on the south shore of Kauai, and it was a judicious
choice. The south shore is a tranquil area of sunshine and beaches, with views of both mountains and
sea. Today, the south shore is home to Poipu Beach Park, one of the best-known and most popular
in Hawaii, and to Koloa, a plantation town of authentic historic charm. The state’s most comprehensive
botanical garden is here, as is one of its most appealing features, the geyser of seawater known
as Spouting Horn on Kukui`ula Bay. And today, of course, the south shore is home to Kukui`ula.
